What is teen IOP?
An adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides regular therapy and structured activities for teens managing behavioral problems or mental health conditions. These programs offer intensive mental health support for those who require more than weekly therapy sessions but do not need 24-hour supervision. They usually involve family, group, and individual sessions.
At Avery’s House, we understand that every teen’s journey to recovery is unique. To meet the diverse needs of our young participants, we offer both an IOP and a higher level of outpatient treatment: a partial hospitalization program (PHP or day treatment).
Day Treatment (PHP)
- Our day treatment is a full-time program that runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Drop-off is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., and pick-up is between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m.
Teen IOP
- Our teen IOP is a part-time program. Participants attend weekday sessions between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. three to four times per week.

Is there a teen mental health crisis in Scottsdale?
As teenagers navigate adolescence, they may experience anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance abuse, challenges that can interfere with academic success, personal relationships, and overall quality of life. Like many cities across the United States, Scottsdale, Arizona has seen a recent rise in mental health and substance abuse issues among adolescents for a variety of reasons.
According to Mental Health America, Arizona ranked among the bottom five states for access to mental health care in 2023. Especially concerning, the Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health reported in 2024 that 70% of Arizona teenagers in mental health crisis receive no treatment.
At Avery’s House, we aim to lower this percentage. Proper diagnosis, treatment, and support can prevent many of the long-term effects of adolescent mental health issues.

Is IOP right for my child?
Intensive outpatient programs are best for adolescents with mental health concerns that disrupt their daily lives. These problems may include withdrawal from friends and family, engagement in risky behavior, substance abuse, constant mood swings, self-harm behaviors, and suicidal thoughts. If your troubled teen needs more than a weekly therapy session but not inpatient treatment, an IOP is a convenient, flexible way to get them ongoing support.
Is IOP covered by insurance?
As with most healthcare, coverage varies across insurance plans. While some plans cover the full cost of IOP treatment, others may require copays or have deductibles that must be met before coverage begins. Avery’s House is in-network with several carriers, but you will need to check with your provider for details.
How long are teens in IOP?
The length of a teen’s IOP varies depending on their needs and progress. They typically last from two weeks up to two or three months—or even longer in cases of severe trauma, substance abuse, or other mental health issues.
What is the difference between IOP and regular therapy?
Regular outpatient therapy usually occurs only once or twice a week, amounting to a mere hour or two of direct support. An IOP is far more intensive—usually 10 or more hours per week—giving participants more frequent support and a greater chance of success.
How effective are IOP programs?
Research suggests that IOPs effectively reduce crisis events, treat symptoms, improve overall functioning, and reduce readmissions to inpatient hospitals. The IOP model may be especially beneficial for youth because it allows them to continue to attend school, maintain developmentally important social relationships, and avoid out-of-home placement, an experience that can exacerbate mental health issues.
